Kathy Ombler is a freelance outdoor writer, longtime contributor to Wilderness Magazine and FMC’s Backcountry, and someone who has spent decades learning the outdoors from the inside.

Kathy grew up on a Waikato dairy farm, discovered the mountains through Outward Bound in the 1970s, and went on to work in outdoor education, conservation, and writing — often before formal qualifications or systems existed.

We talk about early tramping experiences that were adventurous, risky, and formative; the realities of outdoor education “in the old days”; learning judgement through mistakes; and how the land, people, and experiences shape you over time.

Kathy also shares favourite tramps, huts, wildlife encounters, writing stories, conservation work, and what continues to draw her back into the bush.
